Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the rain-shadow region of the Western Ghats and is home to several species and animals that are peculiar to the thorny vegetation. Apart from dry thorn forests, the region has a diverse range of habitat types such as deciduous forests, dry thorny forests, riparian types, sholas, and grasslands that are interspersed with plains, hills, rocks, and cliffs that provide microhabitats for various forms of life. It is a haven for reptile fauna and the richest in Kerala regarding species diversity. Albizia lathamii, a severely endangered species, has been discovered in Chinnar's dry woodlands. It is a well-known medicinal plant repository. A strong population of Grizzled Giant Squirrels lives in the riverine forests of Chinnar and Pambar. Chinnar has recently reported seeing the famed white bison of Manjampatti. The Chinnar and Pambar rivers are the sanctuary's primary perennial water resources. The Chinnar River begins in Kumarikal Malai and flows 18 kilometers along the sanctuary's northwest side, eventually becoming the Amaravati River in Tamil Nadu. The Pambar River starts in the Anaimudi Hills and is fed by seasonal rivulets and a few perennial streams that flow from sholas in its upper levels. It flows down into the sanctuary through the Taliar Valley between Kanthalloor and Marayoor villages, then eastwards through the sanctuary after traversing Turner's Valley in Eravikulam National Park. At Koottar, it meets the Chinnar River. The Thoovanam waterfalls are located deep within the Pambar River sanctuary. Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary provides excellent potential for the development of a dynamic model of biodiversity protection in a human-dominated terrain.
Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is best visited after the rainy season. The torrential rain revitalizes the area, infusing it with new energy and vitality. In Kerala, the rainy season is followed by spring. During spring, 965 species of blooming plants will be in full bloom, creating a bright, wonderful spectacle in front of your eyes. The lakes and streams will be in full flow, and the atmosphere will be festive. Summers are also popular with visitors. Avoid going during the monsoon season. Continuous rainfall might result in flash floods and landslides.
Within its grounds, the Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary provides hostels, jungle camps, and Forest IB. There are no five-star accommodations available. They are nonetheless comfortable and provide minimal conveniences. Furthermore, you can stay in hotels, resorts, or lodges in Marayur, the nearest town, for a comfortable stay.
