Nilgiri Thar

Nilgiri Thar

The Nilgiri tahr (Nilgiritragus hylocrius) is an ungulate that is endemic to the Nilgiri Hills and the southern portion of the Western and Eastern Ghats in the states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala in southern India. It is the only species in the genus Nilgiritragus and is closely related to the sheep of the genus Ovis.

Gaurs

The gaur (Bos gaurus) is found in Munnar’s verdant tea estates and the nearby Eravikulam National Park, and can often be seen grazing nonchalantly in the tea fields, its dark brown coat glistening in the rays of the rising or setting sun. At one time in the 1950s, the gaur was known to abound in Munnar’s environs, to the extent that a vast valley that used to be overrun by the bovines came to be known as Bison Valley. It’s still known as such though the gaur is seldom seen there now, settlers having moved in extensively.

Besides this Twenty-six species of mammals have been identified in the park. Besides the ungulates in the park include Gaur, Indian Muntjac, and Sambar Deer. The predators include Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Wild Dog, Dhole, Leopard, and tiger. Nilgiri Langur, Stripe-necked Mongoose, Indian Porcupine, Nilgiri Marten, Small Clawed Otter, Ruddy Mongoose, and Dusky Striped Squirrel are also among the inhabitants of the park.
