July marks the onset of heavy rains, chilly weather, and misty mornings in Munnar. The seasonal downpours add a rhythmic swaying to the green trees and make the waterfalls thunderous. This season is alluring for those who find joy in the idea of sipping a warm coffee while admiring the rain-kissed mountains from their cozy hotel or resort. Here are some of the attractions in and around Munnar to get away from the hubbub of the city and wind down under the soothing rainfall.
Tucked away in the folds of the Nilgiri Hills, Photo Point is a must visit for those who love taking photogenic pictures of themselves. For around 40 INR, you can dress up as a tea-picker and have photographers take a picture of you, with the divine tea plantation in the background.
There are also several roadside food carts that offer local fruits, coconut water, tea, or coffee for you to rejuvenate yourself. You can indulge in everything that Photo Point has to offer within an hour as well.
This attraction is available from 10AM to 8PM.
Lockhart Gap is a vantage point with a naturally formed heart-shaped gap in between two mountains. A popular trekking spot, it is located about 12 - 13 km away from Munnar.
Besides enjoying the sublime views over a hot beverage, there is also a rock cave nearby, named Malayil Kallan Guha, which translates to ‘The Thief’s Cave by the Mountain’. As its name suggests, it’s a cave that was once occupied by a thief who created nuisance for passersby. As a tourist, you can revel in these myths while at Lockhard Gap.
This is a spectacular spot for picnics, boat rides, and more. In July, during the monsoons, you can experience the surreal beauty of the blooming of pink cherry blossom flowers. Since these plants only bloom twice a year, witnessing this is indeed a rare privilege. The Lake makes for a beautiful boating experience, with tea plantations and lush hills accompanying you in the background. You can partake in this experience easily by renting pedal boats, row boats or shikaras; you can also pay to ride a horse on the lake banks.
A gen hidden away within the borders of Eravikulam National Park, this waterfall provides a plethora of relaxed experiences. Tiny fish inhabit the pool where the water from Lakkom Falls gathers; if you place your feet in its waters, the fish nibble away at them —it is like getting a free foot-spa treatment. You can also bring along a basket of food and organize a little picnic; the lush greenery and the soothing flow of the water will be lovely complements to your meal. You may also pique the curiosity of the local monkeys —just make sure they don’t steal your food! The rainy season, which starts in July, also results in the waterfall swelling to its highest capacity — truly a sight to behold.
